57"Bad Dog, Bad Dog"- No More
Are you always yelling "no" at your dog? Do you find yourself asking "Why did I get this puppy?" If done correctly training your dog should be fun for both you and puppy or adult dog. Just like people, dogs learn better in a calm and positive environment. Teach your dog the basics first so she will learn more advance dog training will be much faster. It is important to remember that a full grown dog only has the maturity of a small child or toddler.
Introducing a Puppy or Dog to your home
When introducing your puppy to his new home, start slow and start outside! Walk to the area you want them to use when they go potty. Give them plenty of time to relieve themselves before heading indoors. Keep the new environment as calm as you possibly can. Remember, your new dog is going to be afraid. This is all new and scary to them. Bring them into the home, and let them get used to a room at a time. Slowly bring other family members and pets to meet your new puppy . Be prepared for the fact that it will most likely, take several days before your dog becomes comfortable with their new environment.
Dog or Puppy proofing your house
Before you bring your new puppy or dog home, it is important to get his or her home ready. It is natural for a dog to investigate his new home. Make sure you dog proof your home just as you would if a small child were coming to visit. Make sure to have plenty of chew toys available for the puppy to chew on. Put things away or out of reach for the puppy. It won't be the puppy's fault if your favorite pair of shoes get chewed up!
Decide before the dog's arrival where he will sleep. Know where the dog will go when she is outside. Will she be in a fenced in area, on a dog run or walked a leash?
Consistancy is the best dog training tool
Always be consistent when training your dog. You want to make sure that you are giving your dog the same message all the time. It confuses the dog if he gets corrected for a behavior sometimes but, not other times. The same applies if you are training a puppy or training an adult dog. Make sure you are being clear about the behavior that you desire from your dog. For example, don't say down if you really mean off.
Basic dog training methods can be taught by repeating with the same commands while pointing out the desired behavior. By reinforcing the good behavior your dog or puppy will learn much more quickly.
Crate Training
Crate training can be a wonderful experience for both you and your new dog. It can be used for a place that they can retreat to if they are scared or tired. It can keep them safe when you are not home or available to watch them. Never use the crate as a form of punishment, though. It can make housebreaking, or potty training your puppy much easier. Make sure the crate is the right size for the puppy. You can get a larger crate and block part of it off as the puppy grows.
Potty Training Your Puppy
A crate can help with potty training your puppy or dog, because they don't like to go to toilet where they sleep. When you take your puppy out of their crate, or when they wake up from sleeping, take them immediately outside to potty. Take your puppy out about 15 to 20 minutes after they have eaten. You also want to give them a potty break if they have done something that is stimulating or exciting, like playing or going for a car ride, or meeting a new person or pet. Make sure to praise the dog when they do what you want them to do, where you want them to do it. If they do happen to have an accident in the house don't scold or yell at them. Even though it is frustrating to you, the dog doesn't understand what you are screaming about. If you catch to puppy in the act of going potty in your home, take them outside quickly. They will get the message and do what you want them to do if it is done with a positive approach.
